Last updated: 24 October 2026. The interview is the final step in Rashtriya Military School (RMS) admission, and it carries real marks. This guide explains how the RMS interview works under RMS CET 2026, what the panel looks for, the most common questions with tips on answering, a sample interview, a defence GK checklist and a four-week preparation plan.
How the RMS Interview Works
Candidates who qualify the RMS CET written exam (13 December 2026) are called for a medical examination at a listed military hospital and then an interview at one of the Rashtriya Military Schools. For RMS CET 2026, medicals and interviews are scheduled for February–March 2027.
Interview marks: 20 marks for Class 6 and 50 marks for Class 9. They are added to the written score to make the final merit list.
For Class 6, the interview is also the last tie-breaker after Maths, Intelligence, GK and English.
No travel allowance is paid, so plan the journey to the allotted school in advance.

What the Interview Panel Looks For
Confidence and communication: clear answers, eye contact and a polite tone.
Motivation: a genuine reason for wanting to join RMS and an interest in the armed forces.
General awareness: basic knowledge of current affairs, India and the defence forces.
Values: discipline, honesty, teamwork, respect and responsibility.
Interests: sports, hobbies and activities. Sports are valued in a residential military school.
Thinking ability: simple reasoning or situation-based questions.
Readiness for boarding school: whether the child can live away from home and look after themselves.

How to Answer Well
Answer in short, complete sentences. Start with "Sir" or "Madam".
If you do not know an answer, say politely: "Sorry sir, I do not know." Never guess wildly or make things up.
Speak about your own experiences: a match you played, a book you read, a festival in your town.
Keep answers honest. Interviewers quickly notice memorised answers that do not sound like the child.
Sit straight, keep hands still, and wish the panel when you enter and leave.
Sample RMS Interview (Practice Dialogue)
Interviewer: Good morning. Please introduce yourself.
Candidate: Good morning, sir. My name is Ravi Kumar. I am studying in Class 5 at a school in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. My father is a farmer and my mother is a teacher.
Interviewer: Tell me something about Visakhapatnam.
Candidate: Sir, Visakhapatnam is a coastal city and an important port. The Eastern Naval Command of the Indian Navy is located there. It is also known for its beaches and the steel plant.
Interviewer: Why do you want to join Rashtriya Military School?
Candidate: Sir, I want to become an army officer and serve the country. RMS will teach me discipline and leadership and help me prepare for NDA.
Interviewer: What qualities should an officer have?
Candidate: Sir, discipline, courage, honesty, leadership, physical fitness and the ability to take quick decisions.
Interviewer: What is your hobby?
Candidate: Sir, I play kabaddi and I like reading stories about freedom fighters.
Interviewer: If you miss your parents in the hostel, what will you do?
Candidate: Sir, I will talk to my friends and teachers, stay busy with studies and sports, and call my parents on the allowed days.
Practise this kind of conversation at home with a parent or teacher acting as the interviewer, in English.
Defence GK Checklist Before the Interview
The three services and the names of the current Chief of Army Staff, Chief of Naval Staff, Chief of the Air Staff and Chief of Defence Staff. These change, so check the latest names just before the interview.
The five Rashtriya Military Schools: Chail, Ajmer, Dholpur, Belagavi and Bengaluru.
Equivalent ranks in the Army, Navy and Air Force (for example Captain, Lieutenant and Flight Lieutenant).
Gallantry awards: Param Vir Chakra, Maha Vir Chakra, Vir Chakra, Ashoka Chakra.
Key defence institutions: NDA (Khadakwasla), IMA (Dehradun), Indian Naval Academy (Ezhimala), Air Force Academy (Dundigal, near Hyderabad).
Commands near you: Eastern Naval Command at Visakhapatnam; Air Force Academy at Dundigal, Telangana.

Four-Week Interview Preparation Plan
Week 1: prepare and practise a 1-minute self-introduction in English. Learn about your town, district and state.
Week 2: learn the defence GK checklist and RMS facts. Read the news daily for 15 minutes.
Week 3: practise answers to all common questions aloud. Record and listen to yourself.
Week 4: full mock interviews with a teacher or parent; work on posture, greetings and calm answers to unknown questions.
Tips for Telugu-Medium Students
Start speaking simple English at home every day; fluency matters more than fancy words.
Prepare key answers (introduction, why RMS, family, hobbies, town) in clear English first.
If you do not understand a question, politely ask: "Sorry sir, could you please repeat the question?"
What to Wear and Carry
Clean, simple clothes or school uniform, polished shoes, neat hair.
The interview call letter, admit card and any documents asked for in the letter.
Reach early; travel the day before if the school is far away.
