The National Defence Academy (NDA) is one of the most prestigious institutions for those aspiring to serve the nation in the armed forces. It provides a comprehensive pathway for young men to become commissioned officers in the Indian Army, Navy, or Air Force. Vacancies Per Course
The NDA conducts two courses annually, each offering a total of 320 vacancies. The distribution is as follows:
- Army: 208 vacancies
- Air Force: 70 vacancies
- Navy: 42 vacancies
Notification and Application
The notification for the NDA exam is published in Employment News and leading daily newspapers in June and December. The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) issues the notification and oversees the examination process.

Candidates must apply online through the UPSC official website during the specified application periods in June and December.
Eligibility Criteria
Age
Candidates should be aged between 16½ to 19½ years on the first day of the month in which the course begins.
Qualification
- For the Army: A candidate must have completed the 12th Class of the 10+2 system of education or an equivalent qualification.
- For the Air Force and Navy: The candidate must have passed 12th with Physics and Mathematics.
Marital Status
Only unmarried male candidates are eligible to apply.
Selection Process
- Written Examination: Conducted by UPSC, the exam evaluates candidates on Mathematics and General Ability.
- Services Selection Board (SSB): Shortlisted candidates undergo rigorous evaluation at the SSB, which includes psychological tests, group tasks, and personal interviews.
SSB Schedule
- For the January Course: SSB interviews are conducted between September and October.
- For the July Course: SSB interviews are conducted between January and April.

Commencement of Training
- January Course: Training begins in January.

Training Academy
Training takes place at the National Defence Academy (NDA), Khadakwasla, Pune.
Duration of Training
- NDA: 3 years
- Indian Military Academy (IMA): 1 year
During their time at NDA, cadets undergo rigorous physical, academic, and leadership training, molding them into capable and disciplined officers. Upon completion, cadets are sent to the IMA for specialized training in their respective services.
